Due to the lack of rain in Texas in 2011 it is hard to find Hay here in Florida. So much of it is being shipped to Texas due to the drought they had last year. I finally found some Coastal Hay and it went from 4.75 per bale to 7.95 per bale. I am not having a problem finding perennial peanut hay which I purchase at 12.95 per bale because it is so good for my goats. Most people are not willing to pay that much for Perennial Peanut Hay so it is not that hard to find. Are you having trouble finding hay and what prices are you paying?
Let's all do a Rain Dance for Texas :)

Finding hay isn't the problem, it's finding money to pay for the hay. I have horses, so I need Alfalfa and Bermuda grass. BOTH are over $17.75 a bale for under 100lb bales! It is absolutely crazy. And there is no sign of the prices dropping.
We seem to be pretty stable over the last 5 years at $5 per 60 pound bale. ( We need 300 bales to get our three horses through the winter). I agree, hay ain't cheap, but then again, what is?
We had the same problem here....Missouri and Arkansas had PLENTY of hay, but most of it went to Texas, so even though OUR hay crop was good, we're struggling to find good hay without taking a mortgage out!
Feed store I am going to right now 3 wire orchard grass hay is $16.95 and Alfalfa is $19.95. Finally had enough rain in February to green up the pastures, rained last night so that should keep grass going awhile longer. So far this year have only had 1/3 of normal rainfall, hopefully rest of this month thru May will make up for it.
Most growers here in Australia won't advertise a price 'cos it is a shifting market but here are a few links to grower sites:

Prime lucerne hay goes for around $AUS13 +10% GST and delivery charge if you are not picking it up. Irrigated oaten hay bales are around $AUS8 +10% GST
Wow! I knew things were getting expensive, but hay? We bale our own pastures - mostly orchard and timothy grass with some clover. The winter was pretty good here (WV) so we didn't use nearly the normal amount. Prices are running about $3 for "square" bales and $25 for four foot round bales.
Another thing, if you are beef people - we expect that store price to go crazy! Not only because of the hay cost, but right now the market is paying us $1.80 a pound on the hoof, about $.50 more than ever before. That is going to be scary in the grocery store.
No doubt it's going to be affected to our global warming situation.
In South Texas, my friend who raises grass fed beef can't find large round bales of hay for less than $60..... Even at that price, it's hard to find.
I live in south central Tx. (Moulton) and it is seling for 9.50 per bale or 50$ per round bale and I've still got some in my pen so I'm doing well.
